OVERVIEW

Begun in 1502, the Fortaleza Ozama guarded the mouth of the Ozama river and the first permanent European city in the Americas. Its Torre del Homenaje served as a prison for over four centuries, under Spanish, Haitian, French, American and Dominican control, ending with the Trujillo era.

HISTORY

Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo commanded here; the fort held political prisoners into the twentieth century.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Guards and visitors report footsteps and voices in the tower's upper chambers. The building's use as a prison across four centuries is documented; the rest is anecdote.
