OVERVIEW

Built by convict labour between 1851 and 1859 and in use until 1991, Fremantle Prison is the largest convict-built structure in Western Australia. Forty-four people were executed here. It is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.

HISTORY

The prison was still using buckets in cells when it closed in 1991, and a riot in 1988 caused major fire damage.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The site runs an established torchlight tour and reports centre on the cell blocks and the gallows.

VISITING
