Gibraltar Point Lighthouse
FOLLOWToronto, ON
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Begun in 1808 on the Toronto Islands, the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes and one of the oldest structures in the city.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Its first keeper, German-born John Paul Radelmüller, was killed on 2 January 1815 after soldiers from Fort York came looking for his bootlegged beer; two Glengarry Light Infantry men were charged and acquitted. Keeper George Durnan reported unearthing bone fragments and a decayed coffin in 1893, and Radelmüller is said to walk the tower and grounds.
VISITING
On the Toronto Islands, reachable by public ferry; the grounds are open, the tower is not.
