Gold Hill was a booming mining town after gold was discovered nearby in 1824, part of the first documented gold rush in the United States; the Randolph Mine on the site reached roughly 850 feet, among the deepest gold mines in the country before the Civil War.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Local legend recounts a miner murdered in the Randolph Mine in 1842 and thrown down a shaft, his body never recovered; visitors and staff report cold drafts, footsteps, and a shimmering light said to appear near the old shafts.
