OVERVIEW
Built in 1898 at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, the Golden North was Alaska's first three-story hotel, built to house prospectors passing through Skagway; it operated as a hotel into the 1990s and its gold dome still anchors downtown.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Local legend holds that a woman named Mary died of illness in Room 23 while awaiting her fiance's return from the goldfields; generations of staff and guests reported a misty female figure and unexplained cold in the room, though some longtime residents have said a later owner played up the story to draw visitors.
VISITING
The building now houses shops; the ground floor is open to the public, with the upper floors closed to visitors.
