Green Man's Tunnel (Piney Fork Tunnel)
FOLLOWSouth Park Township, PA
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A short disused railroad tunnel on Piney Fork Road in South Park Township, south of Pittsburgh. The legend attached to it is of the Green Man, or Charlie No-Face, said to glow green and to appear to anyone who parks in the tunnel and calls him. Behind the legend is Raymond Robinson (1910–1985), who at eight lost his eyes, nose and an arm to an electrical burn on a trolley bridge in Beaver County and, unwilling to be seen by day, walked Route 351 near Koppel at night for decades; drivers stopped to talk to him and photograph him, and the stories travelled.
HISTORY
Robinson lived with family in Koppel and was a local figure, not a phantom; the tunnel legend borrowed him. He died in a nursing home in 1985.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Visitors report a green glow and a figure in the tunnel, and the older ritual of stopping the car and calling for him. The person the stories are about was real and is documented; the haunting is the legend that grew around a man who could not bear to be looked at in daylight.
VISITING
A public road; the tunnel is passable on foot. Treat the story with the man's dignity in mind.
