OVERVIEW
The quarantine station for the port of Québec for 105 years, through which more than four million immigrants passed; the official register lists 7,480 burials on the island, 5,424 of them in the single famine year of 1847, most of those Irish. It is now Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The island's mass graves, undersupplied fever sheds and overwhelmed medical staff have made it a fixture of St. Lawrence ghost lore; visitors and staff describe voices and a heavy atmosphere near the cemeteries and hospital ruins.
VISITING
Open seasonally via Parks Canada-authorized ferry from Berthier-sur-Mer or Montmagny.
