OVERVIEW

Along a several-mile stretch of road called the Devil's Promenade near Quapaw, straddling the Oklahoma-Missouri-Kansas tri-state area, witnesses have reported a glowing orb since at least an 1881 published account; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers investigated in 1946 and could not settle on a cause.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Witnesses describe a basketball-to-baseball-sized light that moves along the road, rises above the treetops, and vanishes; some, including the Corps of Engineers, have suggested distant vehicle headlights as an explanation, but the sightings predate widespread automobile traffic and remain debated.

VISITING

A public rural road; visited at night by sightseers.
