OVERVIEW

A hot-springs resort southeast of La Grande with roots to 1864; the brick hotel was expanded by Dr. William Phy into the Hot Lake Sanatorium, which declined after a 1934 fire and later served as a nursing home before restoration.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Long-running legends describe a nurse, a groundskeeper, and former patients; the site was featured on ABC's The Scariest Places on Earth in 2001.

VISITING

Restored as a lodge; open to the public with lodging and tours.
