OVERVIEW

Huis Binnenveld is a country house and farm on the former estate of the same name in Huissen, in the municipality of Lingewaard, Gelderland. To the local people it is better known as 'het spookhuis van Huissen' — the haunted house of Huissen. It is a rijksmonument (national monument).

HISTORY

The Bynenfeldt estate already existed in 1586, but the manor was founded only in 1735, when the house was built. Around 1813 it passed to the Vermaas family, who modernised it and kept it until mid-2008. During the Battle of Arnhem (1944) the house stood in the front line.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

In May 2008 the dilapidated house was bought by Emile Ratelband, who had a restoration plan drawn up and meant to live there himself — but his then wife would not live in it at any price, because it was said to be haunted. Ratelband sold it on to Johan Vlemmix, who planned to base his own television station there; that failed and the house went to a property developer. Wikipedia's list of reportedly haunted locations also records the house and the local belief that it is haunted.

VISITING

Restored in 2019 and divided into apartments, with more in the neighbouring barn: private homes, to be seen from outside.
