Hyde Park Barracks
FOLLOWSydney, NSW
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway and completed in 1819, the barracks housed up to 600 convict men. From 1848 it was an immigration depot for single women — many of them Irish famine orphans — and later an asylum for destitute women. It is a World Heritage site and a museum.
HISTORY
Vast quantities of objects were recovered from beneath the floors, preserved by rats nesting there — one of the richest archaeological deposits of its kind.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Staff and visitors report movement in the dormitories. The museum interprets the site through its occupants rather than through hauntings.
VISITING
Open daily as a museum.
