OVERVIEW

A chinampa in the Xochimilco canals south of Mexico City, tended for decades by Julián Santana Barrera, who left his family to live there alone and covered the trees with dolls recovered from the canals and rubbish, trading produce for more.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Santana said he hung the first doll in tribute to a girl he found drowned in the channel nearby; relatives maintain he imagined her. He regarded the dolls as protectors and welcomed visitors. In 2001 he was found drowned in the same stretch of water, and the island has drawn visitors ever since, many bringing further dolls.

VISITING

Reached by trajinera boat from the Xochimilco embarcaderos; a long trip, usually arranged in advance.
