OVERVIEW

The vast Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey are the setting for the Jersey Devil legend, traced to the 1700s and the "Mother Leeds" tale around Leeds Point; the creature was famously reported in a wave of sightings across the state in January 1909 covered by newspapers of the day.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Witnesses have described a winged, hooved, horse-headed creature and unearthly screams in the pines for more than two centuries; the 1909 flap produced dozens of reports and became a defining episode of the legend.

VISITING

The Pine Barrens are public state forest with extensive trails; Leeds Point is a small coastal community.
