OVERVIEW

Kennecott operated as a copper-mining camp from 1911 until the mines and railroad shut down in 1938, leaving one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the United States, now a National Historic Landmark District within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Railroad and construction workers in the area have long described unexplained wailing, tools going missing from belts and toolboxes, and glowing shapes near the old tracks; visitors also describe an unplaceable sense of being watched among the mill buildings.

VISITING

Open to the public for self-guided and ranger-led tours, reached by road from McCarthy.
