OVERVIEW

The Orang Pendek ('short person') is a creature said to live in the remote mountain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia — a ground-dwelling, bipedal ape covered in short fur, 80 to 150 cm tall. Most claimed sightings are in Kerinci Regency, especially within Kerinci Seblat National Park.

HISTORY

The nomadic Suku Anak Dalam (Orang Rimba) of the lowland forests say it has shared their forest for centuries; in Bukit Duabelas they speak of 'Hantu Pendek', more spirit than animal. Dutch settlers brought it to the West in the early 20th century; the surveyor van Heerwarden described meeting a dark, hairy creature on a branch while surveying land in 1923: 'There was nothing repulsive or ugly about its face, nor was it at all apelike.'
