Ladd School Memorial Grounds
FOLLOWExeter, RI
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
The site of a state institution that operated from 1908 to 1994, founded to house people with developmental disabilities. Its later decades drew serious documented criticism over conditions and care before it was closed and its residents moved to community settings. Nearly all of its buildings were demolished by 2014, leaving open grounds and a memorial to those who lived and died there.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The abandoned grounds became a well-known subject of local exploration and reported activity; the site is best understood through the difficult institutional history it represents, and is treated with that respect.
VISITING
The buildings are gone; the grounds and memorial are the focus of respectful visits.
