OVERVIEW
Lake Ikeda is a caldera lake about 40 km south of Kagoshima on Kyūshū, Japan, best known to tourists for Issie (イッシー), a saurian creature said to live there. The lake holds large eels, some six feet long.
HISTORY
In local legend Issie was a white mare whose foal was taken by a samurai; unable to find it, she leapt into the lake and her despair turned her into a giant beast that surfaces still, searching. In 1978 a man known as 'Mr Matsubara' was said to have photographed the creature, and about twenty other people reported seeing it swim that year: black, with two humps each about five metres long.
