Landhuis Jan Kok
FOLLOWWillibrordus, Curaçao
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Built around 1650 and among the oldest surviving landhuizen on the island, Jan Kok stood at the centre of a plantation whose enslaved workers cut salt from the pans below. Curaçao was a major Dutch slave-trading depot, and the 1795 uprising led by Tula began on a neighbouring plantation.
HISTORY
The house has operated in recent decades as an art gallery.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Jan Kok is the most consistently reported haunted building on Curaçao, and the reports are attached specifically to the enslaved people who worked the salt pans. The history is documented; the reports are not.
VISITING
Opening hours vary; the salt pans and their flamingos are visible from the road.
