Llancaiach Fawr Manor
FOLLOWNelson, Wales
DIRECTIONS →No public access. Do not trespass: it is illegal and can be dangerous.
OVERVIEW
A semi-fortified stone manor above the site of Llancaiach Colliery near Nelson, built about 1530 for the Prichards and extended by David Prichard in 1628 with a grand staircase and oak-panelled rooms. The council restored it and staffed it with costumed servants living in the year 1645, ran ghost tours and paranormal evenings, and hosted Most Haunted; it mothballed the site at the end of December 2024 while it looks for another way to run it.
HISTORY
Colonel Edward Prichard received Charles I here on 5 August 1645 as the king tried to raise Wales after Naseby, and within weeks went over to Parliament and held Cardiff Castle against the Royalists. The house was a farmhouse for three centuries after.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The house names four spirits: a housekeeper, Mattie, on the stairs; a boy who fell from a window; a man in the bedchamber; a woman in the kitchen. Wales Online sent a journalist in 2018 who saw nothing and said so. Told by the museum, and entered as its tradition.
VISITING
CLOSED since December 2024 — the council has mothballed the manor and its website is archival. Do not travel without checking whether it has reopened.
