Loon Lake Cemetery
FOLLOWLakefield, MN
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A small, largely abandoned pioneer cemetery in rural Jackson County, established in the settlement era. It is the burial place of Mary Jane Terwillegar, who died in 1880 at seventeen — records attribute her death to diphtheria while working in Iowa.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
A widely retold local legend recasts her as an executed "witch" whose grave carries a curse; historians and the Jackson County Historical Society note the legend is largely folklore, and repeated vandalism led to her headstone being moved to the historical society for safekeeping.
VISITING
A public cemetery; visitors are asked to respect the grounds and neighboring private land.
