OVERVIEW
Andros is fringed by one of the world's densest concentrations of blue holes — flooded limestone sinkholes formed during glacial low sea levels. Several connect to extensive underwater cave systems and are protected within national parks.
HISTORY
The holes have been studied by cave divers and researchers since the 1960s; tidal flows through them can be extremely strong.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Bahamian folklore holds the deeper holes to be the lair of the Lusca, a creature described as part octopus and part shark, blamed for pulling swimmers and boats under. The tradition is old and well recorded; the animal is not.
VISITING
Several blue holes are accessible within national parks. The underwater systems are for trained cave divers only — the tidal currents have killed experienced people.
