OVERVIEW

Established in 1824 to hold the state's most serious offenders, the Thomaston prison operated for over 175 years before a modern facility replaced it in Warren and the old site was closed and later redeveloped.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Former staff and area residents have long reported cold spots, disembodied voices, and clanging cell-door sounds tied to the old cellblocks, along with a presence some attribute to a 19th-century inmate who died violently within its walls.

VISITING

The historic prison complex is closed; the Maine State Prison Showroom and local historical markers remain publicly accessible in Thomaston.
