OVERVIEW

A large shallow lake northwest of Winnipeg whose reported serpent predates settlement, appearing in Anishinaabe oral tradition as gichi ginebig, "great serpent." Manipogo Provincial Park on the west shore was named for the creature in 1960.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The first settler report dates to 1909, with clusters in 1948 and 1960; on 10 August 1960 land inspector Tom Locke and sixteen others said they saw three creatures near Toutes Aides. Descriptions range from 13 to 50 feet with a dark humped body. Skeptics point to moose and large sturgeon.

VISITING

The lake and Manipogo Provincial Park are open to the public.
