OVERVIEW
The Min Min light is reported along the roads of far western Queensland, most often near Boulia. Accounts describe a bright light that approaches, keeps pace with a vehicle or rider for long distances, and then vanishes. Reports date from at least 1918 and continue.
HISTORY
The name comes from the Min Min Hotel, a staging post between Boulia and Winton that burned down early last century.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
A 2003 study by Professor Jack Pettigrew of the University of Queensland demonstrated that an inverted mirage — a Fata Morgana — can carry light from a vehicle or fire far beyond the horizon and reproduce the effect, and he replicated it in the field. Many researchers accept this; reports continue regardless, and not all fit the model.
VISITING
Boulia maintains the Min Min Encounter visitor centre. The light itself is where it is.
