Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato
FOLLOWGuanajuato, GTO
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A museum above the Santa Paula cemetery holding bodies that mummified naturally in Guanajuato's dry mineral soil. They were disinterred between 1865 and 1958 under a law requiring relatives to pay a tax to keep a grave; the earliest, from 1865, is the French doctor Remigio Leroy.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Gravediggers initially lined the mummies up and charged a few pesos to view them, and early visitors broke off fragments as souvenirs. The city opened the museum a decade later; 59 of the original 111 remain on display. The preservation process is natural rather than ritual, though the collection has drawn a long tradition of local ghost lore.
