OVERVIEW
Built in 1885 for the pastoralist Christopher William Crawley, Monte Cristo remained with the family until 1948 and stood derelict until Reginald and Olive Ryan bought it in 1963. It operates as a museum and the family still lives there.
HISTORY
Deaths recorded in connection with the house and estate over the years include a child who fell from the balcony and a stablehand who died in a fire; the details vary between tellings.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The homestead has been reported as haunted continuously since the 1960s and features in most Australian ghost literature. The accounts are numerous, long-running and entirely anecdotal.
VISITING
Open to visitors most days; night tours run regularly.
