OVERVIEW

An 83-metre waterfall on the Montmorency River east of Quebec City, higher than Niagara, at the foot of which the Battle of Beauport was fought on 31 July 1759 during the Seven Years' War.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Legend holds that a local woman — named Mathilde or Rose depending on the telling — lost her fiancé Louis among the militiamen killed in the battle, and threw herself from the falls in her wedding dress; her body was never recovered. Visitors report a white figure in the mist, and the wispy cascade beside the main falls is called her veil. No historical record of the couple exists.

VISITING

Open to the public year-round as Parc de la Chute-Montmorency.
