OVERVIEW

Virginia City boomed after the 1863 Alder Gulch strike, one of the richest placer-gold discoveries in the Rockies, and much of the 1860s town survives as a preserved historic district. The Bonanza Inn building served as an early courthouse and later as a hospital run by the Sisters of Charity in the 1870s.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Guests and staff report a black-robed figure associated with a nun, Sister Irene, said to have cared for the sick in town, along with unexplained noises and odors on the upper floors.

VISITING

Preserved historic town open to the public; lodging and ghost tours operate seasonally.
