OVERVIEW

A remote river valley roughly 500 km west of Yellowknife, protected since 1976 as Nahanni National Park Reserve and known in Dene as Nahʔą Dehé.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The legend began when Charlie McLeod found his brothers Frank and Willie dead at their 1905 prospecting camp, reportedly with their heads severed; the area became Deadmen Valley and the creek Headless Creek. Later lore added a lost gold mine, a hidden tropical valley and hostile spirits. Parks Canada attributes most of the disappearances to an unforgiving environment.
