DIRECTIONS →
OVERVIEW
Developed from 1725 and named for Horatio Nelson, who was based here from 1784 to 1787, the dockyard was built and maintained by enslaved Africans and served the Royal Navy's Leeward Islands squadron. It was closed in 1889, restored from the 1950s, and inscribed by UNESCO in 2016.
HISTORY
Nelson himself disliked the posting intensely and called the island a vile place.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Staff in the restored buildings report footsteps and doors moving. The dockyard presents itself as history, not as a haunting.
VISITING
Open daily as a national park; several buildings operate as hotels and museums.
