OVERVIEW
Opened in 1904 for patients with mental illness, the campus grew to more than twenty buildings and thousands of patients by mid-century before closing in 1996; most structures have since been demolished, and the property is now controlled by the Mohegan Tribe under redevelopment oversight.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Former staff and later urban explorers reported sounds of children on upper floors, screaming from specific wards, and doors scraping open with no one present; the reports are tied by many to the facility's recorded history of patient deaths and its decades of institutional hardship.
VISITING
Closed to the public; the site is actively patrolled, fenced, and posted against trespassing due to demolition hazards and asbestos.
