OVERVIEW

A small island in Mahone Bay where a reported 1795 discovery of a depression and buried log platforms launched more than two centuries of treasure hunting; the search is documented in books, historical records, and the long-running History Channel series "The Curse of Oak Island."

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Theories range from pirate gold and Templar relics to buried naval treasure; a "flood tunnel" and man-made structures are said to defeat every excavation, and legend holds that seven men must die before the treasure is found.

VISITING

The island is privately owned; formal tours have operated seasonally, but the interior dig sites are restricted.
