OVERVIEW

A Romanesque and Victorian Gothic prison that operated from 1896 to 1990, closed under a federal consent decree over conditions; it later gained fame as the primary filming location for The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Reports include disembodied voices, footsteps, and cold spots concentrated in the east cell block and the unventilated west attic, where hundreds of inmates were crowded after a 1930 fire at the Ohio Penitentiary.
