DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Alabama's first permanent state capital (1820-1826), later home to Castle Morgan, a Confederate prison that held thousands of Union soldiers; repeated flooding and the loss of the county seat after the Civil War left the town abandoned by the early 1900s.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Visitors report a glowing white orb in the former garden maze, described since an 1862 sighting, along with disembodied voices, shadow figures, and a sense of being touched near the old prison and cemetery grounds.
VISITING
Preserved as a state historic site with daytime access and an annual nighttime Haunted History Tour.
