OVERVIEW

Built in 1882 as the Lake County sheriff's residence with a jail addition in 1926, the building held bank robber John Dillinger, who escaped in March 1934 using a gun he carved from wood and darkened with shoe polish.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Visitors and staff report cell doors opening and closing, rattling bars, disembodied voices, and footsteps on the cellblock; the jail also hosts a seasonal haunted-house attraction.
