DIRECTIONS →Access is limited. Check hours, permits or bookings before you go.
OVERVIEW
Originally a copper mine worked from 1707, the site was converted in 1773 into New-Gate Prison, the first state-chartered prison in the American colonies, holding inmates in the damp underground mine tunnels until it closed in 1827; it is now a Connecticut state historic site.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Visitors and guides report unexplained voices echoing in the tunnels, sounds of footsteps and screams with no visible source, and the sensation of being touched, which staff link to the harsh conditions endured by 18th-century prisoners.
VISITING
Operated seasonally by the state as a tour site; check current hours before visiting.
