The Palatine Light
FOLLOWBlock Island, RI
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A phenomenon reported in the waters off the north end of Block Island, tied to the 1738 wreck of the emigrant ship Princess Augusta, later remembered as the Palatine. Many of its passengers died on the crossing and in the wreck, and 19th-century islanders, mariners, and visitors recorded a recurring light offshore around early winter.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Witnesses over generations describe a burning-ship light appearing over the sea between Christmas and the new year; the sightings were widely recorded and remain unexplained.
VISITING
The waters and Block Island's public shores are open to visitors; the light itself is unpredictable.
