DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Also called Santa Paula, a cemetery built in 1848 to bury the dead of the epidemics and famines then sweeping Guadalajara. It closed to burials in 1896; the wealthy section survives intact and the grounds now operate as a museum.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Its legends include the Pirate, the Lovers, the Monk, the Nun and the Child Afraid of the Dark. The best known is the Vampire Tree: a suspected vampire is said to have been staked and buried here, the stake later splitting the stonework and growing into the tree standing today. Night tours cover the spirits; day tours cover history and architecture.
VISITING
Open to the public as a museum, with day and evening tours and Day of the Dead events.
