Pend Oreille Paddler
FOLLOWSandpoint, ID
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Lake Pend Oreille, one of the deepest lakes in the United States, has produced reports since 1944 of a large creature nicknamed the Paddler, described as serpentine and over 20 feet long with a head likened to a horse or camel; some attribute early sightings to wartime submarine testing out of the nearby Farragut Naval Training Station.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Sightings recurred in the 1970s, including a widely-repeated 1977 account from Sandpoint City Beach; witnesses describe a body moving in vertical undulations at the surface.
VISITING
The lake and its public beaches, including Sandpoint City Beach, are open to visitors.
