OVERVIEW

Opened in 1851 and closed in 1997, Pentridge held Victoria's most serious offenders. Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in Australia, was hanged here in 1967. Ned Kelly's remains were reinterred at the site and were exhumed again in 2011. The bluestone complex has been partly redeveloped, with sections retained for tours.

HISTORY

D Division and the isolation cells of H Division are the most notorious parts of the complex.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The retained cell blocks are the focus of visitor reports; tours operate on that basis.

VISITING

Parts open for guided tours; the wider site is now residential and commercial.
