OVERVIEW

A masonry fort on the Delaware River whose 1777 siege by the British fleet delayed the enemy long enough for Washington's army to reach Valley Forge; it later served through the Civil War and both World Wars before becoming a museum.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Among the most-reported haunted sites in the region; the best-known legend is the "Screaming Woman," associated with Elizabeth Pratt, who fort records show died in 1803. Visitors and investigators report screams, footsteps, and apparitions in the officers' quarters and casemates.

VISITING

Open to the public as a museum, with regular ghost hunts and tours.
