OVERVIEW

A large rock outcrop on the hills above the town of Aserrí, south of San José, visible from the valley and a local landmark and walk.

HISTORY

Aserrí is an old indigenous and colonial settlement; the rock has been a reference point since.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The Bruja Zárate — the most famous witch of Costa Rican legend — is said to live in or beneath the rock, guarding treasure and appearing to travellers, sometimes as a beautiful woman, sometimes as an old one; the rock is 'enchanted' and the place her power is strongest. The legend is in every Costa Rican anthology and is Aserrí's own; it is folklore, recorded as such.

VISITING

Reachable on foot from Aserrí; a viewpoint over the Central Valley.
