OVERVIEW

Fortified from 1778 as a British naval base, Pigeon Island was where Admiral Rodney watched the French fleet at Martinique before the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. It was earlier used by the French corsair François le Clerc — Jambe de Bois — in the sixteenth century. A causeway joined it to the mainland in 1972.

HISTORY

The island holds barracks ruins, gun batteries and Fort Rodney.
