OVERVIEW
Plymouth was the capital of Montserrat until the Soufrière Hills volcano, dormant for centuries, began erupting in 1995. Pyroclastic flows and ash buried the town; nineteen people were killed in June 1997. The southern half of the island remains an exclusion zone and Plymouth is the only ghost capital city in the world with a de jure capital that cannot be entered.
HISTORY
Two thirds of the population left the island permanently. Buildings stand buried to the first floor in hardened ash.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The town is not primarily a paranormal site — it is a catastrophe site — but former residents and boat visitors describe it in the terms usually reserved for one.
VISITING
The exclusion zone is closed. Plymouth is viewed from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, by boat, or on rare escorted access.
