OVERVIEW
An active 5,426-metre stratovolcano southeast of Mexico City, known locally as Don Goyo and monitored continuously by the Webcams de México camera network, whose night feeds have made it one of the most-watched volcanoes in the world.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Stop-motion webcam sequences show lights rising in front of the cone, holding, then dropping back; a cigar-shaped object was recorded crossing the crater in 2013 and another appeared to enter it in 2014. Believers describe the crater as a portal; sceptics point to insects lit by the cameras' infrared, drones, aircraft and optical artefacts.
VISITING
The volcano itself is closed to climbers; the standard viewing point is Amecameca and the Paso de Cortés.
