OVERVIEW

Operating from 1830 to 1877, Port Arthur held convicts who had reoffended after transportation. Its Separate Prison applied a regime of total isolation and silence intended to break prisoners psychologically; many were transferred from it to the asylum next door. Over 1,000 people are buried on the Isle of the Dead. It is a World Heritage site.

HISTORY

The site is also where 35 people were murdered on 28 April 1996. That is recent history within living memory, it is memorialised on site, and it forms no part of the site's ghost tours — nor should it form any part of paranormal interest here.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Port Arthur has run ghost tours since 1988 and is among the most-reported sites in the southern hemisphere; accounts centre on the parsonage, the Separate Prison and the asylum. The convict history is documented in extraordinary detail.

VISITING

Open daily. Ghost tours run nightly and are booked separately.
