OVERVIEW
From 1832 to 1984, ships arriving in Sydney with disease aboard were held at North Head. Tens of thousands of people passed through; smallpox, typhus, bubonic plague and Spanish influenza all came ashore here. At least 580 people died at the station and were buried in three cemeteries on the headland. It is now a hotel and historic site within Sydney Harbour National Park.
HISTORY
The sandstone walls are carved with thousands of inscriptions left by detainees over 150 years — one of the largest collections of such engravings anywhere.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Q Station runs regular ghost tours and is among the most-reported sites in Australia; accounts centre on the hospital precinct, the shower blocks and the wharf. The station's recorded history of death and separation is not in dispute; the reports are anecdotal.
VISITING
Open as a hotel and for day and night tours.
