OVERVIEW
Quinta da Regaleira is a manor house and garden near the historic centre of Sintra, built between 1904 and 1910 for António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro to designs by the Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini. It is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and stands among the other great Sintra properties — Pena, Monserrate, Seteais, Quinta do Relógio.
HISTORY
Carvalho Monteiro was enormously wealthy, well read in alchemy, the Knights Templar, the Rosicrucians and Freemasonry, and built the estate as a programme rather than a decoration. The grounds carry grottoes, wells, benches, fountains and a chapel laid out with that symbolism, connected by tunnels.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The Initiation Well — Poço Iniciático — is the piece everyone comes for: an inverted tower cut twenty-seven metres down into the rock, with a spiral staircase around nine landings, the number read as the nine circles of Dante's Inferno, ending on a floor inlaid with a compass rose over a Templar cross. It was never a well and never held water. The descent and the tunnels out of the bottom are generally understood as a staged rite of passage — a symbolic death and rebirth. The entry records not a haunting but a building deliberately made as an occult instrument, which is rarer, and entirely documented.
VISITING
Open daily to ticket holders; the well can be walked down and the tunnels through. Steep, wet and dark in places, and very busy in season — timed entry is worth booking.
