OVERVIEW

La Recoleta Cemetery, in the Recoleta neighbourhood, was laid out in 1822 in the garden of the Recollect convent as the city's first public cemetery. Its 4,691 above-ground vaults hold Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina and Nobel laureates. Among them is the mausoleum of Rufina Cambaceres.

HISTORY

Rufina Cambaceres was born in Paris on 31 May 1883, the daughter of the Argentine writer Eugenio Cambaceres and the Italian dancer Luisa Bacichi. Her father died of tuberculosis in 1889; her mother's companion afterwards was Hipólito Yrigoyen, later president of Argentina. Rufina died suddenly on 31 May 1902, the day she turned nineteen.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Popular legend holds that she was not dead but in a cataleptic trance, and was buried alive. The Spanish Wikipedia article notes that some scholars say there is no concrete proof of catalepsy or of a live burial. Her story is the subject of the 2006 documentary 'No hay más sombras: Rufina Cambaceres' and a 2012 episode of the Uruguayan programme Voces anónimas.
