OVERVIEW

Built in 1825, four years before Port Arthur, Richmond Gaol held convicts working on the road to the east coast. The solitary cells, flogging yard and women's room survive intact, making it the most complete early gaol in the country.

HISTORY

The gaol predates most of the colony's surviving convict architecture.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The solitary cells are the focus of visitor reports. Anecdotal.
